Ocean Mixing and Strait Dynamics

چکیده
For the last several summers we have conducted observational studies in Juan de Fuca Strait involving one or more bottom-mounted 300 kHz broadband ADCPs, temperature and conductivity moorings, and CTD profiles and “towyos”. Senior Research Associate Richard Dewey assumes much of the responsibility for this, with involvement of graduate and summer students. A current emphasis is on strong stratified shear flow past an isolated feature.

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...

pollutions. Recently, both Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are experiencing several types of pollution including oil spills and heavy metal pollutions as well as Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) caused by biological and environmental changes. Theiroccurrence of the red tide or harmful algal bloom during fall and winter 2008-2009 caused numerous unknown factors in the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf and G...
متن کاملSeasonally resolved surface water DC variability in the Lombok Strait: A coralline perspective
[1] We have explored surface water mixing in the Lombok Strait through a bimonthly resolved surface water DC time series reconstructed from a coral in the Lombok Strait that spans 1937 through 1990. The prebomb surface water DC average is 60.5%, and individual samples range from 72% to 134%. The annual average postbomb maximum occurs in 1973 at 122%. The timing of the postbomb maximum is consis...
متن کاملLinkages between atmospheric blocking, sea ice export through Fram Strait and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
As a key persistent component of the atmospheric dynamics, the North Atlantic blocking activity has been linked to extreme climatic phenomena in the European sector. It has also been linked to Atlantic multidecadal ocean variability, but its potential links to rapid oceanic changes have not been investigated. Using a global ocean-sea ice model forced with atmospheric reanalysis data, here it is...
متن کاملAstronomical Tides and Turbulent Mixing in ROMS/TOMS
The approach is to incorporate latest developments in turbulence and tidal research and modeling into ROMS. This project complements well, the AESOP program, the ONR DRI on subgrid-scale parameterization and skill assessment of numerical ocean models as well as the new Characterization and Modeling of Archipelago Strait Dynamics (CMASD) DRI. Using the Adriatic Sea (and North Indian Ocean) ROMS/...
